Quote(s) of the Week (March 09, 1997)...

On the Meaning of the Cross...

"The [Swiss Bishops Conference] condemns the use of the figure of Christ to represent the pornographer Larry Flynt as the one being crucified here... The cross is the highest symbol for Christians. Using it to promote a film is unacceptable."

--From a statement issued by the SBK concerning the sacriligious poster
promoting "The People vs. Larry Flynt". The poster depicts the
pornographer in a crucifiction pose against the backdrop of a woman's
      bikini-clad loins. Washington Times, 3/5/97. Page A2.

On Christian Moral Requirements...

"I do not find any justification, from the Bible or the entire Christian tradition, for sexual activity outside marriage. Thus, same-sex relationships in my view cannot be on par with marriage and the church should resist any diminishing of the fundamental 'sacramentum' of marriage."

--Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, spiritual leader of Anglicanism,
in a declaration to an Alexandria seminary that had voted to accept
homosexual students. At least 71 bishops in the Episcopal church have
signed a document saying a committed homosexual relationship meets
Christian moral requirements. Washington Times, 3/4/97. Page A9.

On Making US Proud, Too...

"On a few occasions, I made some telephone calls from my office using a DNC credit card. I do not feel that I did anything wrong, much less illegal. I'm proud of what I did."

--Vice President Al Gore, concerning fundraising that he conducted on
government property. Washington Times, 3/4/97. Front page.

On the Meaning of F E L O N Y...

"It shall be unlawful for any person to solicit or receive any contributions... in any room or building occupied in the discharge of official duties... Any person who violates this section shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years."

--18 U.S. Code 607, the law which makes Gore's actions a federal crime.
And yes, that is three years for EACH violation. Washington Times,
      3/4/97. Page A20.

On Defending Civil Liberties...

"Somehow, members of the film industry and those who critique their products in the Fourth Estate seem to think that the more someone pushes the boundaries of taste in our culture, the more that person should be seen as a 'defender of civil liberties'."

--Oliver North, writing in the February 14th issue of Human Events,
concerning the film, "The People vs. Larry Flynt." Washington Times,
      3/4/97. Page A2.

On Keeping the Law...

"The issue is not church-state separation, nor federalism. It is whether we will have a nation ruled by law or anarchy."

--Phil Baum, executive director of the American Jewish Congress, concerning
the carving of the Ten Commandments in Judge Roy S. Moore's courtroom in
Alabama. A federal case is pending which seeks the removal of the Ten
Commandments from the courtroom. Washington Times, 3/6/97. Page A7.

On Finally Speaking Truth...

"Each human life is unique, born of a miracle that reaches beyond laboratory science. Any discovery that touches upon human creation is not simply a matter of scientific inquiry. It is a matter of morality and spirituality as well."

--President Bill Clinton, concerning the possibility of human cloning.
      Washington Times, 3/6/97. Page A16.

[Editor's Note: Is this the same President who vetoed the bill banning partial-
birth abortion... or is it a clone?]
